We have to bear in mind that when we say 'define the business' we are not only talking about defining
the total business of the client, but instead we are talking of their product divisions, BU, practices...

Therefore within a corporation, the grade map will be different from one business unit to the other.

Defining the business means drawing the red column in the grade map, i.e. setting the ceiling for all jobs
in the organisation. Anybody who is a grade higher than the CEO is immediately fired.

This is a 'not higher than' system, but it also means the initialisation of the system as it will
automatically re-order all the bands and the grades, as we'll see.

Employment and Turnover may seem straightforward measures to take but they're not.

Matrix organisations are confusing and we have to be careful not to count the same
people twice (Product Division and country for example)
