•Variable is in theory infinitely variable, e.g. the slider switch could be positioned in an
infinite number of positions.
•For variables, we measure with a certain resolution. If that resolution is too coarse
for the variation we are trying to measure, then the data can be ‘granular’. This is
undesirable statistically. The resolution of the measurement system can be verified
by conducting a Gauge R&R Study (see GOAL Variable Gauge R&R training
material).
•An attribute can only be good or bad, pass or fail. This is similar to a binary system.
•Much of mechanical visual quality is based on attribute data.
•Process Capability can only be applied to variable data.
